Martial Arts

I met this gentleman and his wife last year under random circumstances and I am so very grateful that I did. In 2005 they moved here to Australia from South Africa and opened a Martial Arts School. Since then they have had many adventures together including the birth of a beautiful little boy. This year I have enjoyed picking his brain about random subjects and hearing what he has to say about them. Some he would answer in the simplest ways and made me realise how much I was overthinking things. On other subjects he would veer off on the best tangent.

He trains and teaches people in Chang Chuan and Hong Chuan Kung Fu, which are practised around the world. SiFu … A term given to someone in Chinese Martial Arts, meaning ‘father’ or ‘teacher’. He's been in the industry for over 20 years and he received the title of SiFu last year. This is a great honour and not given out to many people in the system. He barely even tells people he obtained the title, his wife usually fills people in.

I won’t ever forget what he said when I found out: “it is a great honour and a wonderful title, but I’m not a natural anything, this has all happened with excessive amounts of hard work.”

What is your favourite part about life?

"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women, haha totally joking, I enjoy Conan...."

“Experiencing personal improvement through hard work and effort, or to see improvement in other people as a result of their hard work and effort.”
